Workshop Automation System

Your workshop.
Your rules.
Fully yours.

Digifence is a modular workshop automation system built on off-the-shelf components. Start with one tool, expand to your whole workshop — no proprietary lock-in, no compromise.

The Philosophy

Built different.
On purpose.

I built Digifence because I wanted CNC-accurate fence positioning in my workshop without spending thousands on a closed, proprietary system I couldn't modify. The answer turned out to be simpler than I expected — off-the-shelf components, open firmware, and some good engineering.

Every part of the system is built on components you can source yourself. That means you can repair it, modify it, and adapt it to whatever your workshop actually needs — not whatever the manufacturer decided it should need.

With closed systems, if the manufacturer drops software support, that's it. Features promised when you bought it may never arrive. Digifence doesn't work that way — because you own the whole stack, not just the hardware.

  • Off-the-shelf components throughout — nothing proprietary, nothing you can't source
  • Millimetre-accurate positioning, fast enough to keep up with production work
  • Each module is independent — add what you need, when you need it
  • A single hub controls everything — no internet required, ever
  • Open architecture means you can adapt it to tools and workflows we haven't thought of yet
  • Designed from the ground up for the smaller professional workshop

The System

One ecosystem.
Every tool.

Each Digifence module is designed to work on its own or as part of a wider system. Add what makes sense for your workshop now — everything else can follow when you're ready.

Miter
Fence
DIGIFENCE-MF
Motorised linear fence for your miter saw. Enter a dimension, press go — the fence moves to position and holds it. Load a cut list from a CSV file and work through an entire project automatically.

Saw Fence
DIGIFENCE-BS
The same motorised fence architecture adapted for the bench saw. Rip to precise width, every time, without touching a tape measure. Same dashboard, same cut list system.

Dual-Axis Control — Single Controller Working On It
Router
Table
DIGIFENCE-RT
Two independent axes — a motorised fence and a motorised bit lift — sub-millimetre accuracy on both axes. Set your cutting depth without reaching under the table. Offset your fence easily when required without jigs or rulers.

Dust Management Coming Soon
Digigate
DIGIFENCE-DG
Eight-channel blast gate controller. Each gate is driven by a 12V linear actuator. Control your entire dust collection network from the same dashboard as your fences.

DIGIFENCE-DGG
A compact round status display that mounts directly on the motor controller enclosure. Shows live fence position, movement status, and current nudge and speed settings at a glance — no need to look at the main dashboard. Powered by the same Wi-Fi network and MQTT infrastructure as the rest of the system, no additional setup required.

Ownership & Community

Yours to own.
Yours to build on.

Most workshop automation systems sell you a black box. When they discontinue it or drop software support, you're left with whatever state the software was in on the day they walked away. Features that were promised when you bought it may never arrive — and there's nothing you can do about it.

Because Digifence is built on open firmware, plain HTML dashboards, and documented hardware, a community of users can get together to improve it, share configurations, add features, and take the platform in directions we haven't considered. No one needs permission to make it better.

If you want to run it exactly as designed, you can. If you want to dive into the firmware, rewrite a dashboard, or build something entirely new on top of it — you can do that too.

How to get one
Full Kit
Everything included
Complete kit including electronics, motors, drivers, extrusion, connectors, and PSU. Mount it, wire it, flash it — everything you need to get up and running without sourcing individual parts.
Electronics Only
The brains and controllers
Just the PCB, ESP32, and motor driver — source your own extrusion, motors, and hardware, and build the mechanical side yourself. For those who want full control over every part of the build.

Under the Hood

Open from the
ground up.

Every layer of Digifence is visible, documented, and yours to change. Here's what's actually running the system.

Motor Control
ESP32
Firmware
Each tool is controlled by an ESP32 microcontroller running firmware built with ESP-IDF and flashed over USB. The code is open — read it, modify it, build it yourself. Stepper motors are driven via DM556 drivers over step/direction signals, with rotary encoders and endstops wired directly to GPIO.

Touchscreen Interface
LVGL
Touchscreen
The primary HMI runs on a 10.1" touchscreen driven by LVGL — an open source embedded graphics library. The interface is written in C and fully customisable. If the default layout doesn't work for your workflow, change it. Nothing is locked.
LVGL v9 ESP32-P4 10.1" Display Open Source
Web Dashboards
HTML
Dashboards
Every tool has a web dashboard — plain HTML files you can open in any text editor and modify however you like. No framework, no build process. Connect from any device on the workshop network and control your tools from a browser.
Plain HTML No Framework Any Browser Local Network
Communication
MQTT
Protocol
Every ESP32 in the system communicates over MQTT — a lightweight publish/subscribe protocol that keeps everything in sync without polling. The broker runs on a Raspberry Pi in your workshop. No cloud, no internet dependency, no latency you can't account for.
MQTT Mosquitto Raspberry Pi No Internet
Workshop Hub
Raspberry Pi
Hub
A Raspberry Pi sits at the centre of every Digifence installation — running the MQTT broker, serving the HTML dashboards, and acting as a dedicated Wi-Fi access point for the workshop network. It runs headless, boots automatically, and doesn't need a router or internet connection to function.
